Knowing why teams and groups were created helps you apply the right governance policies.
Purpose tags help you identify the business purpose of your team or group without impacting user adoption. Purpose tags can also show you why a particular group or team was created.
Create purpose tags specific to your Microsoft environment, then use them to identify and manage your team and group purposes. You can use our default purpose tags, or you can create your own.
For more information, see Create and edit purpose tags.
To get your owners to provide more information about their newly created team or group, normally you would turn off the group creation self-serve option in Microsoft 365 and would create a custom request form for owners to complete. With the ShareGate Apricot app, you can keep self-serve on and use the ShareGate Apricot Teams chatbot to automate the categorization of new teams and groups in collaboration with your owners.
Take control of your environment by assigning purpose tags to teams and groups directly via the Manage page.
For more information, see Apply purpose tags.
Relationship to policies
Apply a custom inactivity threshold to your purpose tags to ensure that the business purpose of each team and group has a suitable Inactivity detection policy in place.
For more information, see Walkthrough - Inactivity detection policy.
